The Michigan marketplace in 2026

Michigan shops on HealthCare.gov with seven insurers offering 2026 plans (Molina exited at the end of 2025). Prices are friendlier than most states: the 2026 benchmark averages $523 a month for a 40-year-old — about 16% below the national average — though insurers filed a 14.2% increase for 2027, which would push the average toward $597.

Michigan expanded Medicaid years ago through the Healthy Michigan Plan, so adults up to 138% of the poverty level have coverage and there is no gap. As in most expansion states, the squeeze is on households above the 400% subsidy cliff — and on anyone whose 2026 renewal came in roughly 20% higher after the enhanced credits expired.

Where private plans fit in Michigan

Michigan’s below-average base rates make the private-vs-Marketplace race closer than in high-cost states — and we’ll say so honestly when the Marketplace wins. But for healthy self-employed households in Grand Rapids, metro Detroit, and up north who cleared the cliff, underwritten pricing still frequently beats $523-and-climbing, and it takes one call to know.

The honest tradeoff, same as everywhere: private plans use medical underwriting. They price on your age and health, which is exactly why healthy applicants often pay less — and why they are the wrong answer if you manage an ongoing condition, take costly prescriptions, are pregnant, or are mid-treatment. In those cases guaranteed-issue ACA coverage protects you in ways no underwritten plan can, and we will tell you so on the first call. Michigan questions we hear most

How much is health insurance in Michigan without a subsidy?

Michigan's published 2026 benchmark averages $523 a month for a single 40-year-old (KFF) - one of the better state averages - with a 14.2% increase filed for 2027. Because Michigan's base rates are competitive, sometimes the Marketplace genuinely wins; we tell you when it does. Healthy applicants above the subsidy cutoff should still run the comparison.

Where do Michiganders enroll in ACA coverage?

Through the federal marketplace at HealthCare.gov. Open enrollment for 2027 opens November 1, 2026. Private underwritten plans can start any month of the year.

Did Michigan expand Medicaid?

Yes - the Healthy Michigan Plan covers adults 19-64 up to 138% of the federal poverty level. If your income is in that range, check it first; it will usually beat anything else.
